FAQ Hair - Swimmers

Can shampoo remove chemicals and minerals that cause discoloration and damage to swimmers’ hair?

No shampoos alone cannot remove chemicals and minerals that cause discoloration to swimmers’ hair. The minerals found in pool water bond to hair like a magnet causing buildup deep into the hair shaft leading to damage and discoloration. A shampoo cannot deep cleanse these minerals from the hair. The only proven way to gently, safely, and effectively REMOVE the buildup in swimmers' hair is with Malibu C® Wellness Actives. Malibu C ® After-Swim Solution Wellness Actives are formulated with natural, food-grade vitamins that are safe and gentle for all ages and all hair types.

Daily use (or whenever you shampoo your hair) of Malibu C ® Swimmers' Water Action® Shampoo helps PREVENT the buildup of chemicals (chlorine) and minerals from your hair while providing gentle, sulfate-free cleansing and weekly use of Malibu C ® After-Swim Solution Wellness Actives PREVENTS and REMOVES any buildup of chemicals and minerals leaving swimmers' hair healthy, free of discoloration and full of radiant shine and manageability.

BUST THE MYTHS and GET THE FACTS EVERY SWIMMER SHOULD KNOW!

MYTH: Chlorine causes swimmers’ green hair.

FACT: While chlorine plays a role in swimmers’ hair green, the true culprit is copper. The mineral copper is added to pools to kill algae. Copper attaches to hair like a magnet turning blondes green and brunettes darker. Chlorine, a harsh oxidizer added to pools to kill bacteria, accelerates the attachment of copper in the hair.

MYTH: Sodium thiosulfate is the safest and best ingredient for swimmers’ shampoos.

FACT: Sodium thiosulfate is a potentially harsh chemical that can remove chlorine, however; in order for it to not be dangerous it must be formulated in an alkaline solution with a pH usually over 8.0. Not only does this high pH open the cuticle (the outer layer of the hair shaft) causing the minerals in the pool water (the biggest issue for swimmers) to attach onto the hair that much quicker, but the minerals are not water soluble and therefore cannot be removed with such a formula. Additionally, our research has confirmed that sodium thiosulfate in a low pH shampoo or treatment will result in the formation of sulfites and sodium dioxide gasses (which emits a smell like rotten eggs), known to be an irritant for asthmatics and others with potential respiratory conditions.
